Showcasing a radiant golden hue, this exquisite wine reveals lavish notes of ripe pear, fresh citrus, and vanilla. Undertones of honeyed oak impart complexity and depth. Widely respected, Chateau Montelena Napa Valley Chardonnay is an exceptional choice for both casual evenings and grand celebrations alike.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Bright gold in the glass, the wine opens with green apple, honeysuckle and orange blossom. The citrus in particular seems to be most evident, as lime leaf and lemon zest at this stage. This vintage was more classic rather than overly ripe, so it’s not surprising. There’s a hint of fresh wood and vanilla as well, adding some nuance without overshadowing the beautiful floral character. Palate: The parade of citrus marches on, although the midpalate turns more tropical with starfruit and pineapple. And while there’s still plenty of green apple, the texture and juiciness of Asian pear adds complexity and depth. The acid is consistent and winds its way through the profile, lifting the texture and balancing the suppleness from barrel. This will be a long-lived wine. Finish: The transition to the finish is still somewhat abrupt due to the wine’s youth and dynamism. This will change over time. But here, the character is dominated by lemon curd and pie crust, along with chalk and fresh apricot. The acid is still mouthwatering, although it has mellowed somewhat. Despite its young age, the overall length of this Chardonnay is impressive.

About the Winery

Chateau Montelena

Nestled amidst verdant vineyards in Napa Valley, California, lies the majestic Chateau Montelena winery. This iconic establishment paints an endearing image with its quaint ivy-drenched stone façade, a beacon of tradition set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most renowned wine regions.

The winery's history stretches back to 1882, when Alfred L Tubbs established it by planting sprawling vineyards interspersed with native trees draped in Spanish moss. After surviving a lengthy period of prohibition and two world wars, Chateau Montelena solidified its global prestige in 1976. The triumph came at the legendary Judgment of Paris tasting, with their stunning 1973 Chardonnay triumphing over several eminent French offerings. This surprise victory catapulted them to international stardom, altering the perception of New World wines forever.

Today. Chateau Montelena remains a hallmark of excellence in winemaking. Maintaining meticulous vineyard practices and passion for quality, they produce wines that are a testament to this dedication. Their prodigious output spans rich Chardonnays with delicate minerality to bold and expressive Cabernet Sauvignons. Each bottle embodies the essence of Napa Valley, weaving a tale of the region's unique terroir and the years of craft and care imbued in its creation.

Visitors to the Chateau can immerse themselves in a comprehensive tour, absorbing the winery's historical grandeur and getting a first-hand experience of their vinification process. The true delight, however, is towards the conclusion of the tour, where guests are treated to a curated tasting of the Chateau's remarkable wines.

In essence, Chateau Montelena is a testament to resilience, perseverance, and passion. Its journey from its humble beginnings to international acclaim is as palatable as its delectable wines, making it a must-visit for all wine enthusiasts and history plenty alike.
