Owned and managed by Angus and Davina Thomson, Urlar winery's constant endeavour has been to harmoniously blend traditional practices with innovative viticulture techniques. The Thomsons', originally from Scotland, have earnestly inculcated biodynamic practices since their purchase of the vineyard in 2004. In reverence to their Scottish heritage, the winery is christened ‘Urlar’, meaning ‘the earth’ in Gaelic.
Every inch of Urlar winery echoes its commitment to ethical practices; employing organic and biodynamic farming methods that aim to restore the soil's fertility and nutrients without harming the ecosystem. The winery is also proudly certified by Biogro, New Zealand's leading organic certification agency.
