Product Notes

Mount Horrocks Clare Valley Nero d’Avola is a bold and characterful Australian red wine. It is made from southern Italy's most reputable grape, displayed in a vibrant ruby red hue. The wine possesses intense aromas of dark fruit and just a whisper of spice. On the palate, it offers teasing black cherry and plum notes, meshed harmoniously with subtle hints of black pepper. This low-yield varietal is produced via organic viticulture, yielding an expressive, medium-bodied wine, balanced by subtle oak and ripe, structured tannins. It's an intricate dance of taste that lingers intriguingly, echoing its complex Mediterranean heritage.

Tasting Notes

Bright red with lifted, generous aromas of red berry fruit and floral notes. The palate is bursting with cherry and other red berries, lively spice and a crisp, tangy edge. So fresh and zippy, with typical ‘Italian’ minerality, gentle but firm tannins and long-lasting fruitiness on the palate.

About the Winery

Mount Horrocks

Mount Horrocks is an esteemed winery nestled in the picturesque Clare Valley of South Australia. A hidden gem, it is much admired for its commitment to organic viticulture, producing limited quantity of high-quality, hand-crafted wines each year.

The winery covers 10 hectares of organically-cultivated vineyards, divided into distinct sites for different grape varieties; Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Semillon. Each vineyard is painstakingly hand-pruned and the vines hand-picked. This labour-intensive approach provides exceptional grapes that distinctly express their individual terroir. As they say, "Hands on the vines, eyes on the wines."

At the head of this boutique winery is Stephanie Toole. Since she took over Mount Horrocks in 1993, her dedication to sustainable and organic practices has led to this winery being Certified Organic by Australian Certified Organic. Her ability to handsomely capture the character of the grapes in the wines, has earned her critical acclaim; and a loyal following of wine enthusiasts, both locally and internationally.

The wines of Mount Horrocks, from the bright and zippy Riesling to the juicy and sumptuous Shiraz, are all made in an old railway station, which was refurbished into a modern, minimalist winery in 2003. Visitors can enjoy tastings and purchase the wines directly from the source, every weekend. Its cellar door is a welcoming venue, full of personality, offering an intimate wine-tasting experience that's far removed from the industrial-style set-ups of larger wineries.

Exceptional wines impeccable service, and stunning vistas, Mount Horrocks is truly a slice of wine-lovers paradise. And while this boutique winery may be small in production, its heart is anything but – as it continues to produce memorable wines that unquestionably raise a toast to the beauty and bounty of Australia's Clare Valley.
