Corsica

Corsica, famously known as the "Island of Beauty," is not just a place of stunning landscapes but is also renowned for viticulture. Despite being a French territory, Corsican wine boasts a distinct character due to its unique Mediterranean climate and diverse soils.

A thriving part of the French wine industry, Corsican vineyards cover an eclectic mix of terrain, creating a fascinating array of wine styles. The vineyards, nestled within mountainous landscapes and basking in abundant sunshine, are fed by a beautifully balanced marine and mountain breeze. The island is predominantly composed of granite and schist soils, with limestone prevalent on its eastern plains.

Corsican wine is categorised into nine AOCs, with the ability to produce both high-quality reds, whites, and roses. Niellucciu and Sciaccarellu, the leading red grape varietals, offer unique and flavourful notes. Niellucciu yields wine reminiscent of Italy's Sangiovese with its rustic, full-bodied edge, whereas, Sciaccarellu, grown predominantly in Corsica’s western Ajaccio region, produces wine with an evocative scent of red fruits, spice, and intriguingly, fresh herbs. Not to be outdone, the white Vermentinu varietal creates crisp, vibrant wines, filled with delightful citrus notes and elements of green almond and dill, reflecting the aromatic maquis landscape.

Corsica’s wine production, whilst proudly French, acknowledges its Genoese and Italian influences. One can observe the subtle Italian inspiration with a nod to Tuscan styles that sometimes even provide a reminiscence of the Greek influence, given the island's historical tapestry of diversity.

For the wine aficionado, the wines of Corsica indeed offer a unique and delicious exploration of its exceptional terroir. Despite the relative obscurity of its wine industry on the world stage, the quality and diversity of Corsican wine are undeniably impressive. Therefore, Corsican wine is treasured by those who appreciate their grape juice to express the history, culture, and natural beauty of its origin.
