Abouriou

Abouriou

Abouriou is a relatively lesser-known variety of red grape, native to Southwest France. Characterised by its small berry size, this grape type is primarily found in regions like Gascony and Béarn. Prized for its deeply pigmented, hefty, and characteristic wines, the Abouriou grape is often seen as a finishing touch, but occasionally produces varietal wines too.

Quite uncommon, it is believed that the grape has been in cultivation for several centuries. It has also gone by other names such as 'Early Burgundy' due to its propensity to ripen earlier than many other grape varieties. Although the berry is thick skinned, it is susceptible to various vine diseases, explaining its somewhat less extensive cultivation.

The wines produced from the Abouriou grape are distinguished by their robust tannic structure, moderate acidity and compelling dark fruit flavours, often showing hints of plum and black cherry. Given its tannic structure and fruity aroma, these wines pair well with hearty, savoury dishes – especially ones featuring beef or lamb.

Despite its French origins, the grape has seen cultivation in the United States, particularly in California, where it is blended with other varieties to create distinctive wines. The unforeseen revival of this grape in the 21st century has intrigued wine enthusiasts around the world.

Although Abouriou may not be as globally acclaimed as some of its vinous peers, it certainly holds a special place in the hearts of those who appreciate its distinct, rich character. Its scarcity only adds to its allure, making a bottle of Abouriou wine a prized possession for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
