The Carignan grape is a richly flavoured, hearty variety traditionally associated with the south of France, particularly in regions of Languedoc Roussillon. Originating from Spain, where it is known as Mazuelo, this grape gained popularity due to its high yield and suitability to the Mediterranean climate, with its hot, dry summers and mild winters. Its thick-skinned, late-ripening nature equips it well to resist drought, contributing to its prevalence in these regions.
Carignan, however, is not without its set of challenges. The grape can produce high-alcohol, acidic, and somewhat astringent wines if not handled correctly. Older vines and more careful cultivation methods have improved the quality of Carignan wines considerably. They are often blended with other varieties like Grenache and Syrah to balance its pronounced characteristics.
The best Carignan wines are red and full-bodied, known for their deep ruby colour and robust fruity flavours. They display a range of berry notes, such as raspberry, currant, and plum, and are often accentuated by spice, with hints of black pepper, cinnamon and anise. There is also usually a detectable note of savoury characteristics, like olives and tobacco in the taste. Fine Carignan wines usually possess good acidity and a strong tannic structure.
Across the global vineyard, Carignan has found other homes outside France, particularly in Chile's central valley, Spain's Catalonia region, California's Central Valley, and the Sardinia island of Italy. Each of these regions brings a unique spin to this adaptable grape. In these locations, Carignan continues to demonstrate its resilience and charm, producing wines that balance boldness with complexity, offering a deeply satisfying tasting experience.
