The Chardonnay grape is a green-skinned variety native to the Burgundy wine region of eastern France but now successfully grown in wine regions worldwide. It is exceptionally versatile, both in the vineyard and in the winery, which has contributed to its widespread popularity among wine lovers and producers alike.
Chardonnay grapes thrive in a variety of climates, with a preference for cooler regions. The grape bunches are small to medium-sized, with thin, delicate skins. A fascinating feature of Chardonnay is its ability to reflect the character of the place where it is grown, resulting in a wide array of styles and flavours, from crisp and fruity to oaky and rich.
In terms of winemaking, Chardonnay is often vinified in oak barrels, which impart a rich, creamy texture and notes of vanilla, butter and spice to the finished wine. On the other hand, when fermented and aged in stainless steel or concrete tanks, the wine retains a more fresh, fruity character, more akin to green apple, pear, or citrus.
Chardonnay is also a key component in sparkling wine production, particularly in the creation of Champagne. It even has its own designated style within Champagne, known as Blanc de Blancs (white from whites). When used in such wines, Chardonnay confers structure, longevity, and an enchanting complexity of flavours and aromas.
On the nose, Chardonnay can range from apple and lemon in cooler climates, to tropical fruits, such as banana and pineapple, in warmer ones. Yet, regardless of its growing region, well-made Chardonnay has a distinctive elegance and balance, making it a perennial favourite in the world of wine. Thanks to its versatility and adaptability, it's safe to say that Chardonnay has secured its place as one of the world's most beloved and respected grape varieties.
