Fogliatonda

Fogliatonda

The Fogliatonda grape is an indigenous red wine grape variety that hails predominantly from the Tuscany region in Italy. This grape variety is not widely recognised or distributed. However, it is cherished for its rarity and historic significance in its native region. The term 'Fogliatonda' is derived from the Italian terms 'foglia', meaning leaf, and 'tonda', meaning round, due to its distinctive round-shaped leaves.

Primarily, Fogliatonda grapes are grown in the provinces of Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Florence. The Fogliatonda's bunches are medium to large in size, generally conical, winged, and not very compact. The berries are medium with thick skin and a beautiful dark colour.

Historically, Fogliatonda was once a widely grown grape variety during the 19th century, hence, can be traced back to Tuscan viticulture of medieval times. Nevertheless, it faced a decline almost to the brink of extinction in the 20th century due to difficulties in cultivation linked to its susceptibility to diseases and relatively low crop yield. However, recent years have seen a revival of interest in this grape, resulting in increased plantations and obtaining pure varietal expression in wines.

When it comes to taste, wines made from Fogliatonda grapes are structured with medium body, expressing complexity and medium tannins. They commonly exhibit blackberry and black cherry flavours, intertwined with a hint of black pepper, earthy undertones and spice complexity. The wine's rich flavours and robust structure make it ideal to pair with hearty Tuscan dishes like wild boar ragu or steak Florentine.

Fascinatingly, the Fogliatonda grape has been mentioned by several viticultural scholars and even finds its place in Italian literature. The resurgence of this Tuscan grape demonstrates the Italian wine industry's commitment to preserving and reviving their indigenous varieties, even though they may lack global recognition or face cultivation challenges.
