The Garganega grape is one of Italy’s most ancient and widely cultivated varieties. It is mainly grown in the regions surrounding Soave and Gambellara, in the northeastern parts of the region of Veneto. Garganega grapesare chiefly known for their role in the production of the exquisite Soave wines.
This white grape variety forms large and tight bunches with elliptical shaped grapes that are slightly golden in colour. The grapes have a high skin-to-pulp ratio that gives them a considerable bit of depth and weight once vinted. Their bunches tend to ripen pretty late in the season, making the grapes absorb a lovely amount of sunlight, which adds a distinctive richness to the wine they produce.
Garganega grapes produce wines that are typically light in colour, boasting a delicate and subtle bouquet. They carry a distinct flavour profile housing a blend of citrus, almond, and a light hint of minerality. Some even suggest there's a hint of honeyed almonds lingering on the finish.
When aged, Garganega wines develop a creamy texture and more complex flavours such as notes of honey and toasted almonds. They also possess a refreshingly high acidity and can possess a slightly bitter finish, an interesting quality that sets them apart and adds to their appeal.
In addition to producing Soave, these grapes are also used in blends to produce other types of wines including sparkling and dessert wines. Despite being less renowned globally than some other Italian grapes, the Garganega variety nonetheless holds a special place in Italian viticulture, and is integral to the production of some of the nation's most unique and distinctive wines.
