The Glera grape is most widely known for being the principal component of Prosecco, Italy's much-loved sparkling wine. This grape hails from the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia regions of Northeast Italy, with cultivation records dating as far back as Roman times. Interestingly, the grape didn't become widely known as 'Glera' until 2009; until then, it was commonly referred to as Prosecco, named after the village near Trieste where the grape and wine originated.
The grape's recent name change is primarily due to the increased popularity and exportation of Prosecco around the world, resulting in necessary legal protection of the Prosecco name. Glera is a relatively robust and prolific variety, yielding an abundant crop and demonstrating good resistance to numerous grape diseases.
Glera grapes typically produce light-bodied wines characterised by their high acid levels and stark, invigorating flavours. Green fruit, fresh pear, white peach, and apricot are commonly detected aroma profiles associated with this grape, often balanced with a robust level of brightness and a crisp, clean finish. Sparkling wines made with Glera are usually enjoyed young to preserve their vibrant character, charm, and finesse.
In addition to Prosecco, Glera grapes are also used in a handful of other traditional Italian beverages, such as the slightly sweeter Tranquillo and the popular spritz cocktail. Glera has also been adopted in winemaking regions beyond Italy, with promising plantations in countries like Australia, Argentina, and Brazil. Its sense of simplicity, unpretentious character, combined with an affordable price tag and flexible pairing capabilities, has made Glera and the products it creates, popular choices amongst wine lovers across the globe.
