Hárslevelű is a grape variety largely cultivated in Hungary, specifically in the Tokaj wine region. Its name translates to “Linden leaf,” reflecting its leaves’ resemblance to those of the Linden tree. Having less presence worldwide unlike other grape varieties, Hárslevelű nonetheless holds considerable significance in Hungary’s viticulture tradition, and it constitutes a significant part of the classic Tokaji Aszú dessert wine.
Primarily used as a blending component, this grape variety is mainly combined with Furmint, another native Hungarian variety, to create Tokaji Aszú’s unique flavour profile. Nonetheless, Hárslevelű also generates exquisitely single-varietal wines which are noted for their compelling, complex array of aromatics.
Remarkable for its intense aromatic character, wines made from Hárslevelű display a floral nose of linden flower and acacia which are underlined by captivating honey and citrus notes. Later on, when fully ripened, this grape reveals sophisticated notes of tobacco and exotic spices. These wines often strike a harmonic balance of high acidity and profound sweetness, resulting in a crisp wine that has depth and complexity.
It’s also worth noting that the Hárslevelű grape vine is notably hardy, displaying good resistance to disease which makes it easier to cultivate in comparison to other grape varieties. However, it’s relatively low in yield due to its loose clusters of grapes and susceptibility towards frost damage.
