Lambrusco

Lambrusco

The Lambrusco grape is a celebrated Italian grape variety known for producing sumptuously crisp and slightly effervescent red wines. Originating from four zones in Emilia-Romagna and one in Lombardy, around central and northeastern Italy, this grape is reckoned for its deep history dating back to ancient Roman times.

Lambrusco refers both to the grape and the wine made from it. It is grown as several distinct varieties, notably Lambrusco Salamino, Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Grasparossa, and Lambrusco Marani. They are distinct but share a core DNA structure and possess different nuances in colour and flavour profiles.

The Lambrusco grape tends to grow in large cylindrical bunches, with relatively high yields which make it a favourite with wine growers. The robust vine is resistant to many vine diseases which propels its popularity among vineyards. The grapes themselves have a beautiful deep purple hue and tend to be high in acidity, providing a uniquely vibrant, juicy taste to the wines produced from it.

The wines made from Lambrusco grapes are recognised for their refreshing light body, delightful fruity flavours, and softly sparkling texture. Intriguing hints of blackberries, cherries, and sometimes more earthy tones mingle in these wines, making them a popular choice for summer picnics and outdoor barbecues. The wines can vary from quite dry 'secco' to semi-sweet 'amabile' and sweet 'dolce'.

The unique combination of the acidity and spritz of Lambrusco wines make them the perfect complement to a broad range of foods, particularly Italian cuisine. They famously pair well with pasta, pizza, charcuterie, and rich cheese dishes. Thanks to a modern shift towards quality production and an emphasis on the dry styles, the reputation of Lambrusco wines has been reconsidered and elevated in recent years on an international stage. Despite its sometimes underestimated status, the Lambrusco grape continues to produce wines that offer a unique, enjoyable, and refreshing wine drinking experience.
