Merwah

Merwah

The Merwah grape is one of Lebanon's oldest and most revered grape varieties, predominantly grown in the mountainous regions of the country. A dignified symbol of the country's winemaking heritage, this grape variety is instrumental in producing some of the most distinctive white wines in the region.

Considering its long-term history, it is unsurprising that the Merwah grape finds its roots in traditional viticulture. This small, oval white grape, adorned with a delicate, golden hue, is often grown on untrained, low bushes. This is a hardy and durable varietal, capable of thriving in the challenging conditions posed by Lebanon's mountainous terrain. It copes remarkably well with poor, limestone-rich soils and is resilient against the hot, dry summer weather.

The wine that the Merwah grape yields is often light to medium-bodied, subtly aromatic with hints of floral and green apple notes. It offers a lush texture that closely mirrors that of Semillon, a famous Bordeaux white grape. Its moderate alcohol content is balanced by an elegant acidity that provides structure and longevity to these wines. This can be richly flavoured yet remain, at the same time, refreshing on the palate.

Merwah’s adaptability also means it partners exceptionally well with a wide variety of food, from Lebanese mezze to more robust, spicy dishes. The slightly earthy tones of the wine can complement the savoury flavours in these foods, enhancing the overall dining experience.

In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in indigenous and underappreciated grape varieties from fringe wine regions, including the Merwah grape. Recognising the grape's distinguished heritage and singular character, several Lebanese winemakers are championing its cultivation and leading a renaissance of this remarkable grape variety. Their ambition to bring Merwah back into the spotlight not only showcases the distinctive expression of Lebanon's terroir but also pays homage to an important part of its viticultural history.
