Muller Thurgau

Muller Thurgau

Derived from a cross between Madeleine Royal and Riesling grapes, Mueller Thurgau originated in the late 19th century within Germany. This unique grape is named after its creator, Swiss botanist Hermann Mueller from the Thurgau region. It was primarily cultivated to inject the finesse of Riesling into an easier-to-grow vine.

Prevalently grown in Germany, it occupies a large part of the Mosel, Rheinhessen and Nahe wine regions. Aside from Germany, the Muller Thurgau grape has also found a home in the Northern regions of Italy, New Zealand, Oregon and England where cooler climates exist.

The flavour of the Muller Thurgau grape is particularly unique, offering an attractive sweet aroma combined with peach and floral elements. It occasionally yields hints of spice akin to nutmeg as well, along with a sleek mineral undertone and high acidity. Generally, the wine produced from this grape is meant to be consumed young and cold.

Perhaps the unserious nature of Muller Thurgau is part of its charm. It's a reliable, refreshing, easy-to-drink wine, ideal for picnics and light lunches. In Germany, it's often paired with traditional fare, including sausages and sauerkraut, because it's robust enough to hold its own against these hearty foods, yet its low alcohol doesn't overwhelm them. In the English summer, the grape also allies itself well with lighter dishes, such as chicken salad or grilled fish.

While Muller Thurgau grape often gets overshadowed by its more renowned compatriots, like Riesling, this under-the-radar varietal has demonstrated the potential to produce crisp, light-bodied wines with appealingly straightforward fruit flavours and a fresh, lively character. Whether savoured as a single varietal or as part of a blended wine, Muller Thurgau offers a colourful and refreshing taste experience.
