Muscat of Alexandria is an immensely fascinating and ancient white grape variety, believed to have been transplanted by Alexander the Great from his homeland to various parts of Mediterranean Europe. It is a member of the storied Muscat family of grapes, one of the oldest and most widespread grape families in the world, which also includes varieties such as Moscato d'Asti.
Physically, the Muscat of Alexandria vines are robust, significantly resistant to diseases, and produce large, succulent grapes. The clusters of this grape are large and compact with thick-skinned, oversize berries that have a tendency to hang on the vine. In terms of taste, the Muscat of Alexandria has a notably aromatic character, often described as musky or exotic, which is a characteristic trait of this family of grapes. When the grapes are left longer on the vine, they develop a stronger honeyed taste and can produce quite sweet wines.
These grapes are primarily used to produce fortified wines, in particular, the sun-drenched dessert wines of Spain and Portugal; however, they are also found in dry and sparkling wine styles, as well as in some table wines. In South Africa and Australia, the Muscat of Alexandria grape is often used to make brandy. Furthermore, it is also an important variety for the production of raisins and table grapes.
Though it is not as trendy as its relative, the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, the Muscat of Alexandria’s influence and adaptability solidify its place in the viticultural world. This grape is not only a testament to the historical legacy of winemaking but also a producer of a variety of exotic and alluring wines, that pleases both novice and experienced wine drinkers.
