Picpoul

Picpoul

Picpoul is a distinctive grape variety, originally hailing from the Languedoc region of Southern France. Also known as “Piquepoul”, the name translates to ‘lip stinger’ in the local dialect, due to its high acidity. This creates a tart, crisp profile that is truly unique among white wines.

The Picpoul grape is used to produce the full-bodied Picpoul de Pinet AOC wine, one of the few Languedoc wines to be awarded its own Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) status, recognising its unique characteristics. A versatile grape, Picpoul can be used to create a variety of wine types, although it is best known for its dry white wines.

The grape has a naturally high acidity which is balanced by rich, fruity flavours, often with notes of citrus and green apple. The wine’s bright acidity makes it an excellent match for rich, creamy dishes and seafood, particularly oysters. Some describe the flavour as akin to ‘sunshine in a glass’, with its fresh, zestful character and subtle hint of salinity.

Although less well-known than other French varieties, the Picpoul grape has started to gain international recognition in recent years, with vineyards in California and Australia beginning to cultivate its vines.

The growth habits of Picpoul are somewhat challenging, and it’s known to be susceptible to disease, which may be why it’s less widespread than other varieties. However, in its native Languedoc, it thrives in the clay and limestone soils, and can resist the strong, drying winds of the region. The resultant wine is a testament to the potential of this underappreciated grape: a fresh, vivacious white with an individual character and a crisp, refreshing finish.

To sum up, the Picpoul grape offers wine enthusiasts a unique flavour profile, high in acidity, and producing wines of remarkable freshness and vivacity. Despite its relative obscurity, it is beginning to gain deserved acclaim both within and beyond its French heartland.
