Rkatsiteli

Rkatsiteli is a grape variety known for its longevity and adaptability that originates from Georgia, a country with the oldest wine-growing tradition in the world. Rkatsiteli (pronounced rkah-tsee-tely) means "red stem", a name that reflects the vine's visible characteristics. Owing to its robust nature, this grape is highly resilient to harsh weather, resulting in a consistent quality of wine year upon year.

The Rkatsiteli grape is highly versatile in terms of wine production, used both in blends and on its own merits. It can be crafted into an array of wine styles, including dry, semi-sweet, dessert and even sparkling wines. It is known for its high acidity, which gives rise to a striking and vibrant palate, and its high alcohol content can make its wines fuller-bodied.

The flavour profile associated with Rkatsiteli is distinctive. It typically presents a beautiful balance of floral and fruity notes, such as pear, apricot, and sometimes honey, coupled with a spicy, citrus-like undertone. An added complexity can be lent to the wine by aging it in clay vessels known as qvevri, a traditional Georgian wine-making method. That treatment allows an orange hue and stronger tannins to develop.

Rkatsiteli was nearly lost during Soviet rule when vineyards were uprooted in favour of crops like wheat and corn. However, the grape's resilience and distinctive flavour profile has made it popular once again in its homeland alongside increasing international recognition. Wineries in the United States, Australia, and various other wine-growing regions have been experimenting with this grape, promising Rkatsiteli a potential surge on the global wine market.
