Tintilia

Tintilia

Tintilia is a notably charismatic grape variety native to the Molise region in Southern Italy. Originally thought to be a Spanish import, owing to its name's etymology seeming to originate from "Tinta", meaning red, its Italian provenance has been definitively confirmed by DNA testing. Today, it's cultivated almost exclusively in the hilly areas surrounding Molise.

Established around the late eighteenth century, Tintilia has been traditionally used to produce both red and rosé wines. The grape stands out due to its ability to adapt and survive in the parched and challenging soils of Molise. Its bushy vines grow in serrated, wrinkled leaves, and the grapes themselves are small, round, bluish-black berries. Tintilia grapes are harvested late, generally during the onset of autumn, which contributes to the final wine's rich, spicy notes.

Wines produced from the Tintilia grape reveal a compelling depth of character. They showcase a deep ruby red hue, transitioning to garnet reflections with ageing which bears testimony to their typically rich tannic structure. On the palate, these wines offer a harmonious balance of fruit and spice, with hints of red and black berries, violets, black pepper and liquorice. They are also known for their characteristic mineral undertones derived from the limestone soils of Molise.

When allowed to age, Tintilia wines display excellent longevity, with their intensity and complexity deepening over time. On the nose, they develop intense bouquet of dark fruits, tobacco, and a distinct leafy aroma. These wines are full-bodied and well-structured, making them excellent companions for classic Italian dishes like robust pastas, roasted meats, game and matured cheese.

Despite Tintilia's lesser-known status compared to other Italian grape varietals, its distinctive qualities no doubt hold high potential. Plus, its deep-rooted connection to the land and traditions of Molise make it an intriguing choice for wine connoisseurs seeking to explore the more authentic 'terroir' gems of Italy.
